Surrey doesn't always get the credit it deserves. Sandwiched between London and the South Downs, it is easy to overlook but spend an afternoon wandering through its ancient woodland, standing on the ridge of the North Downs as the light drops low, or meandering through one of its extraordinary landscaped parks, and you quickly understand why it is one of my favourite places to photograph couples. It is quietly, effortlessly beautiful. And beauty like that makes for extraordinary engagement photographs.
Why Surrey is Such a Wonderful Place for an Engagement Shoot
Surrey is a county of genuine variety. Within a relatively small area you have wild heathland, ancient woodland, formal landscaped gardens, chalk downland with sweeping panoramic views, historic estates, and rivers lined with willows. For a photographer, this variety means the ability to move through completely different visual environments within a single session - open and airy one moment, intimate and leafy the next.
It is also brilliantly accessible. For couples based in London or the home counties, Surrey offers the feeling of genuine countryside without a long journey - which matters when you are trying to coordinate two people, an outfit, and the right weather.

The Surrey Hills and Leith Hill
The Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty covers a vast swathe of the county and is perhaps its most photogenic landscape. Leith Hill (the highest point in Surrey) offers a mixture of ancient woodland, open heathland, sweeping views, and wonderful walking paths that make for a completely natural, unhurried engagement session. The tower at the summit adds a distinctive architectural element, and the forest paths below it create beautiful dappled light in the late afternoon.
This is the kind of location that suits couples who feel most at ease outdoors and want a session that feels like a walk together rather than a photoshoot.
Painshill Park
Created in the eighteenth century and one of the finest landscape gardens in England, Painshill Park near Cobham is an extraordinary setting for engagement photography. The park features follies, grottoes, a crystal grotto, a vineyard, and open water surrounded by mature planting - offering an extraordinary variety of backdrops within a single location.
The mix of manicured gardens, open water, and architecture makes it ideal for portraits that feel both romantic and timeless. The crystal grotto is particularly atmospheric, and the autumn colours reflected in the lake are among the most beautiful things I have had the opportunity to photograph in the south of England.
Reigate Hill
Reigate Hill is a National Trust viewpoint that sits on the edge of the North Downs and offers panoramic views stretching all the way to the South Downs on a clear day. Early morning sessions here (before the walkers arrive) feel completely private and extraordinarily beautiful. The light at dawn catches the dew on the grass and the mist in the valley below in a way that is genuinely cinematic.
The hill combines open, dramatic vistas with wooded paths and sheltered banks of wildflowers in spring, giving a session plenty of visual variety without needing to travel far.
Winkworth Arboretum
The National Trust's Winkworth Arboretum near Godalming is one of Surrey's most beautiful and least-visited gems. A hillside covered in rare trees and shrubs with a lake at its base, it is particularly extraordinary in autumn when the colour is at its most spectacular like deep copper, amber, and gold reflected in the still water below.
In spring the azaleas and bluebells make it equally stunning in a completely different register. It is an intimate, quiet location that suits couples who want something a little unexpected rather than a well-known backdrop.
Banstead Woods
Surrounded by chalk downland and comprising 250 acres of ancient woodland, Banstead Woods is a beautiful and relatively undiscovered location for couple photography. In spring the woodland floor is carpeted in bluebells which makes one of the most beautiful natural backdrops for a romantic engagement shoot. The dappled light through the established canopy is extraordinary.
What to Expect from a Surrey Engagement Shoot
An engagement shoot with me is not a formal photoshoot. It is closer to a relaxed walk with a camera nearby. We will move through the location together, I will give you things to do rather than poses to hold, and the images that result will feel like genuine moments rather than staged portraits.
For most couples, the first fifteen minutes are the most nerve-wracking and then something shifts. You stop noticing the camera and start noticing each other. That is when the best images happen, and it is the moment I am always watching for.

Autumn is extraordinary here. The colour in the arboretums and woodland parks is spectacular, and the lower, warmer light of October and November produces images with a depth and warmth that summer simply cannot match.
